“Continuity and Change”
Ann Ekstrom
mixed media series, inkjet & oil on archival paper
I have always felt an affinity for the wonderful old buildings and signage of Fort Worth. Many of my favorite places were lost to the modernist notions of former decades, but others have been gloriously restored. Making these panels has sent me on a trip of discovery and rediscovery. I feel that I have just scratched the surface of my own interest in the quirky history of our everyday past.
My work has always had to do with memory and the passage of time. In this work I have incorporated an array of Fort Worth imagery to create a crazy quilt of random memory using photos, newspaper clippings, postcards and objects. Several Fort Worth friends and historians collaborated by lending items to my collection for this project. Each panel started with a loosely themed photographic composition and I then painted passages over the digital layer. This choice allowed me to include as much information as possible and to work in series and in edition. I hope that the images that resonate for me will also resonate with the viewer and provoke interest or memory.
Fort Worth is a rare large city where many people stay their whole lives. We are a place that remembers its past and cares to know about it in detail. We have both watched and driven change, with wonderful gains and some heartrending losses, in an unabated flow.
